ESRC Survey Link Scheme

The ESRC Survey Link Scheme provides an opportunity for social science postgraduates — both taught Masters and Ph D students — to become acquainted with the large social surveys conducted by the Office for National Statistics, the National Centre for Social Research, NOP or BMRB International.

The Scheme is sponsored by
ESRC Training and Development Board. Its aim is to provide the opportunity to observe the data collection phase of one of the major British large-scale surveys, to see at first hand the problems met in the conduct of interviews. It will also provide a deeper insight into the construction of questionnaires and the conduct of survey interviews.

There are two phases to the scheme. The first involves attending an academic workshop on one day focusing upon a particular survey. The second is allocating some time, during one day of your choice, accompanying an interviewer in the field. It is usually possible to arrange fieldwork observation near the applicant's home base. Travelling and subsistence expenses involved are met.

The University of Surrey and representatives of the survey organisations are running a series of one-day workshops to introduce postgraduates to the techniques used in a major survey. There will be six workshops organised throughout UK between March and December. Please see contact below for further details.

The workshop, which is lab-based, includes a brief overview of
CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing) via the BLAISE computer program used in the development of questionnaires, followed by a practical briefing by a survey professional experienced in the survey. This includes a discussion on the problems of interviewing. Participants will be able to use the CAPI software to go through the interview schedule for that survey during the day.
