ESRC Festival of Social Science Debate: Knowledge Transfer – not just transfer?

Thursday 18 March - The Assembly Rooms 4pm

Join an expert panel in a debate on the nature of Knowledge Transfer between government and academia. Recent reports from the Council for Science and Technology ('How academia and government can work together') and the British Academy ('Punching our weight: the Humanities and social sciences in public policy making') made a number of recommendations for academia and government, including that academia operate "more like consultancy organisations" in their engagement with government (CST report, core recommendation p4).

This debate will explore this topic and explore the questions that this generates, including: What should the relationship be? How can engagement between academia and government in the field of public policy be improved, if indeed this does need improved? Should the broader research community be included in this debate?

Your Expert Panel:

  • Robert Doubleday, University of Cambridge and ESRC Policy Placement Fellow at the Government Office for Science
  • Alison Koslowski, University of Edinburgh
  • Mark Diffley, Ipsos Mori Scotland
  • Barry Stalker, The Scottish Government
  • Kay Tisdall, University of Edinburgh
  • Simon Anderson, Scottish Centre for Social Research
  • Chair: Vivian Leacock, Scottish Government Office of Chief Researcher
  • Debate Timekeeper: Gill Clark, Scottish Government Office of Chief Researcher

Location: The Assembly Rooms, 54 George Street, Edinburgh http://www.assemblyroomsedinburgh.co.uk/

Date and Time: Thursday 18th March: Debate commences 4pm; coffee available from 3.30pm - anticipated end time between 5.30pm and 6pm
