Using Grounded Theory Research Method
Summary: This one day workshop will give social researchers practical insight into the application of Grounded Theory research method. Grounded Theory has been used to great effect in academic research, generating insight into social behaviour and processes that some would argue could not be generated by other methods. This workshop focuses on the application of Grounded Theory approaches outside of academe – looking at how Grounded Theory approached might enhance research insight and outcomes.
Objectives:

By the end of the workshop, delegates will:

  • understand what Grounded Theory is;
  • understand is core philosophy and processes;
  • experience using Grounded Theory techniques; and
  • appreciate how Grounded Theory approaches can enrich the development of insight on commercial and policy, as well as academic research.
Topics

Content includes:

  • The evolution of Grounded Theory, from its origination in the 1960s, and its relationship with other research methods.
  • What Grounded Theory considers as data
  • Open coding and constant comparison
  • Trusting the concept of ‘emergence’ and the development of a ‘grounded theory’
  • Presenting and explaining Grounded Theory insight.

We’ll use a case-based approach during the workshop and there will be a small element of pre-course work for participants.

Who will benefit?

Researchers interested in seeking to expand their portfolio of qualitative research techniques

Learning Outcomes The workshop will provide participants with an understanding of what Grounded Theory research involves and the range of techniques and processes included. A key learning outcomes is the insight the workshop provides into how to apply the philosophy and techniques to augment existing research practice, and seek to enhance possible insight from data.
Course tutor: Simon HaslamThe workshop will be facilitated by SRA member and social research firm director Dr Simon Haslam. Simon completed his PhD using Grounded Theory method, under the supervision of Grounded Theory Institute co-founder Dr Andy Lowe. During this process he studied under Dr Barney Glaser, one of the two originators of Grounded Theory method.

Simon regularly delivers workshops on research related subjects for a range of bodies including the Institute of Directors, Durham Business School – where he is a Visiting Fellow, and an the Department of Marketing at the University of Strathclyde – where he is an Honorary Research Fellow. He is part of a 2008 UK National Training Award winning team.
