Introduction to Research Commissioning
Summary: The way in which social research is commissioned can have a significant impact on the quality and nature of the research that is produced. The object of research commissioning should be to produce high quality, useful and cost-effective research by fair and accountable means. This one day course is designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to help them to achieve this objective.
Objectives:

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  • Know what is meant by “intelligent commissioning”
  • Understand the values and principles underpinning effective commissioning
  • Understand a range of different approaches to commissioning and the circumstances in which they might be employed
  • Have developed skills in drawing up a research brief and assessing proposals.
Topics:

The course will cover:

  • The meaning and importance of “intelligent commissioning”
  • Values and principles informing effective commissioning
  • The commissioning process
  • Approaches to commissioning and commissioning strategies
  • What is needed in a good research brief
  • Assessing research proposals
Who will benefit? Researchers, research managers and others with responsibility for commissioning social research projects.
Learning outcomes: Participants will achieve a good understanding of different approaches to commissioning and the commissioning process more generally. In addition they will gain practical experience of tasks of relevance to the commissioning process.
Course tutor: Janie Percy-Smith is an independent researcher, consultant and trainer with over 30 years of research experience working on a wide range of projects relating to local governance and the use of research in policy and practice. She was, until the end of 2002, Professor of Public Policy at the Policy Research Institute, Leeds Metropolitan University where she continues to be Visiting Professor
