Social Research Association
Researcher/researchers to carry out a short empirical study of Procuring social research in government.
The fee would be £17,000 plus modest travel and incidental expenses.

Details:

The SRA has been given a grant by the Nuffield Foundation to study the different ways of procuring social research in government and whether and how they affect the work that is carried out. The proposal was developed as part of the work of the SRA’s Initiative on research commissioning and funding,

An experienced social researcher(s) is being sought to do this work.

The timetable for the work is flexible and open to negotiation but ideally we would like to see the project completed by the end of October to enable publication and launch before the end of the year.

Inclusion is an independent organisation committed to addressing the challenges of social exclusion and worklessness. We provide research and consultancy for central government departments and agencies, regional bodies, local authorities and providers from the voluntary and private sectors. We are seeking to recruit a Researcher and a Senior Researcher as we continue to expand our research and consultancy business.

Researcher (£25,739 to £31,646)

We are looking for a Researcher with at least 2 years’ experience in conducting social research who is keen to develop their research career further. You will have the ability to apply a broad range of social research methods, with a particularly strong background in qualitative research techniques. You will be comfortable working in teams on large-scale research projects and will have the potential to manage smaller projects.

Senior Researcher (£31,646 to £42,195)

We are looking for a Senior Researcher with at least 5 years’ experience and a proven track record in managing social research. You will have the ability to apply a broad range of social research methods, with a particularly strong background in qualitative research techniques. You will be equally comfortable managing large-scale research projects and smaller projects requiring a rapid turnaround. You will have effective client management skills and the ability to identify and develop opportunities that will enable us to expand our research and consultancy business.

For both posts you will be committed to Inclusion’s overall aim of promoting social justice and tackling disadvantage to help individuals and communities achieve economic independence.

We are open to proposals for flexible working as well as secondments.

Expanding horizons for children’s play

With recent record investment, children’s play has never had such a high priority. Can you help Play England to ensure this opportunity isn’t missed?

Play England aims for all children and young people in England to have regular access and opportunity for free, inclusive, local play provision and play space.

Your role will be to develop, manage and undertake an action research project with primary and early years children and their families in a small number of locations in England. The aim of the project is to identify barriers to children playing out.

You will need a qualification or significant experience in at least one of the following: social marketing; community development; health promotion; or action research with children and families. Alongside this you will need to demonstrate solid partnership working, project management and research skills.

The Wellcome Trust is one of the world’s largest biomedical research-funding charities and its mission is to foster and promote research with the aim of improving human and animal health.

We are looking for an Evaluation Officer within our Strategic Planning and Policy Unit. The main aim of the role is to conduct a range of research and analysis to support the evaluation of Wellcome Trust-funded activity.

The essential skills we are looking for include;

  • Extensive experience working with a range of social research methodologies including: quantitative data analysis, statistical analysis and questionnaire design.
  • Good experience using web-based search tools to support research.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (particularly Excel).
  • Good project and time management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in partnership and as part of a team.
  • A degree in a science or social science subject area, or equivalent experience.

Experience with online survey tools and methodology would be particularly valuable. Knowledge and experience of scientific research evaluation, including bibliometric methodologies, is also desirable.
