This is an exciting opportunity to join the expanding research
department at the National Children’s Bureau.
The post holder will work closely with colleagues on a variety
of research and evaluation projects and NCB consultancy work
as appropriate.
You will be involved in all stages of the research or evaluation
process, from sampling and designing research tools to reporting
and dissemination.
We are looking for someone with practical experience of
empirical research or evaluation outside study for academic
qualifications. You will have experience of designing research
tools and undertaking interviews, focus groups and data analysis.
Sound communication, written and presentation skills are
a must as well as excellent organisation and planning skills
and the ability to meet deadlines.
You will be able to demonstrate the ability to work with
children and young people and have a commitment and sensitivity
to children’s rights and equal opportunities.

by 2010/11. The grant should cover all costs relating to

completion of the research, including travel, subsistence
and tuition fees. |

The Sports Council for Wales (SCW) are inviting submissions
from interested institutions to examine the impact of Let’s
Walk Cymru, a Wales-wide initiative developed in partnership
between SCW, the Welsh Assembly Government and the Countryside
Council for Wales, tasked with increasing the number of
people participating in walking as a regular activity.
Key themes include:
- How participants from a range of backgrounds can
be attracted to walking programmes;
- Social impact on participants in walking groups;
- Developing ownership and leadership within walking groups;
- Barriers to, and reasons for, moving on to independent walking.
SCW are open to the methodological and theoretical approach
chosen to undertake the research, as well as any additional
themes that might be of interest to the selected researcher.
As such, we are interested in receiving submissions from
a broad range of academic disciplines including (but not
limited to) social policy and sociology, human and social
geography, public health, and health, sport and exercise
sciences. It is envisaged that the host institution will support the
successful student to work towards the completion of a PhD,
awarded by the institution, over the period of the research.
Submissions to undertake the work should be a collaboration
between the host institution and the student that they propose
will carry out the research.

OPPORTUNITIES
IN QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
NatCen (the National Centre for Social
Research) is Britain’s
largest independent social research institute. Our portfolio
of studies includes some of the most challenging research
commissioned by central government as well as work funded
by grant giving organisations.
The Qualitative Research Unit (QRU) has opportunities for
Senior Researchers and Research Directors with experience
of qualitative research, preferably in the field of social
or public policy. The appointments will be permanent although
we welcome also secondments of at least 12 months duration.
The QRU specialises in applied policy research. The focus
of this spans a range of substantive topics for a range of
different types of clients but is largely concentrated in
three broad areas:
- Education, skills and employment;
- Social inclusion; and
- Crime, Justice & social legal issues
Our aim is to strengthen our expertise in these key areas
and so we encourage applicants with a track record in them
to apply but we are also interested in those with broader
qualitative research experience. An interest in methodological
innovation or in training others in applied qualitative research
would also be desirable. The QRU offers a friendly, intellectually stimulating environment
with a high profile, challenging research programme. We offer
an environment that supports individual career development,
flexible and favourable working conditions (including generous
holiday entitlement, a pension scheme and every other Friday
off).
Salary will be in the range of £27,926 to £34,953
for Senior Researchers and £36,965 to £42,512
for Research Directors, depending on experience.
