In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement and the Casey Review, public trust in the police - especially among Black communities - has hit historic lows. Survey research also revealed that over 50% of Black police employees faced microaggressions, bullying or harassment from colleagues.

Verian conducted a force-wide, solution-focussed consultation with Black police employees using an innovative approach informed by counter-storytelling, which engaged 106 participants.

The findings yielded 60+ recommendations for systemic reform in policing.

In this session we reflect on the challenges posed by this brief and how we addressed them by building innovation and inclusion into the methodology.

In particular we discuss co-creating the research with sector stakeholders, centering Black narratives, using counter-storytelling in interview settings, creating safe group listening spaces, implementing participant matching, engaging with community leaders, ensuring transparency and accountability.
